Betty Ford Alpine Gardens was founded by a small group of Vail
and Denver horticulturists. Incorporated in 1985, we began raising
funds to plant the Alpine Display Garden (1987), Mountain Perennial
Garden (1989), Mountain Meditation Garden (1991), and Alpine Rock
Garden (1999). In 1988, the Gardens were named in honor of former
First Lady Betty Ford, for her many contributions to the Vail Valley,
our nation and beyond.
The Alpine Rock Garden was opened in 2000 by President & Mrs. Ford. The Children and Schoohouse Gardens were built in 2002. Please take a Virtual Tour through the gardens.
As the organization has expanded in size and commitment, an executive
director and garden staff were hired. Currently, volunteers and
docents support the staff with over 3,500 hours annually maintaining
the gardens, giving educational tours, running the gift shop and
working on events.
As the world's highest botanic garden, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens
is recognized both nationally and internationally. Thousands of
visitors have come to observe its beauty, experience its tranquillity,
and learn about high elevation plants and ecosystems.
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens was originally incorporated as Vail Alpine
Garden Foundation. Our name was officially changed in 2000.
